Warren Coopey I am researching the idea of producing a set of "Top Trump"-style playing cards on the subject of Castles and would be very interested to find your feelings on this idea.
I would like to do this because I feel that it's important to educate and encourage children and adults to take a greater interest in history and 'the world around us', and castles are an interesting and important part of our heritage in Britain, and something to be very proud of and worth visiting.
The pack would include about 50 different Medieveal castles from across Britain and include a range of the different types. It would include categories (used to compete against when playing the game) such a Age, Size, Defences, Attacking force, Importance, plus perhaps Haunted factor.
I am surveying the general public at the moment but would value input from members of this board as they have knowledge and interest in this subject. I would like to know whether you would consider buying such a pack yourself and whether you think your friends or family would too! I would also be interested to know what you would like to see in this pack yourself or any ideas you may have.
For your help, if the pack is gone ahead with i would also like to offer those that respond to this question a half-price or free pack in the future.

AJR Only 50!
Now that would make it hard to decide which ones to include, and which to exclude.
I would include castles such as Warkworth, Bamburgh, Rochester, Bramber, Kilchurn, Cawdor, Restormel, Harlech, Crickhowell, Tretower, Conway, Beaumaris, Dunstanburgh, Dover, Corfe, Carisbrooke, Pevensey, Lewes, Dunnottar, Threave, Sheriff Hutton, Bolton, Middleham, Abergavenny, Pembroke, Kendal, Kenilworth, Brougham, Brough, and dozens of others.
English Heritage already produce a pack of playing cards with pictures of castles managed by them on the reverse of each card. But to include Welsh and Scottish castles too within the 50 would leave me in a dilemma as which ones to exclude. People like me would easily be able to roll off 50, then find another 100 to include.
You have certainly set yourself a hard task, as you will probably find everyone saying "why didn't you include .........?"
It's great that you want to encourage others to take an interest in history. Good luck with your venture.
AJR Moving on from my previous comments, why not start by taking at least one from each county, or two if the county is large, such as Northumberland or Yorkshire. A good spread would probably appeal, but as to which one(s) you choose, ...........
Whatever you do, do it YOUR way. You don't necessarily want to choose the largest or most well-known castle from each area. I would avoid using Windsor or Edinburgh or the Tower of London (how dare I suggest such a thing !!!!).
Include a good proportion of ruined ones as opposed to those still occupied. Consider whether the castle has been added to, rebuilt or restored. Indeed, possibly even choose some where only earthworks remain.
Warren Coopey Thank you very much for your comments Deborah and AJR. I realise that the choice of castles would be contentious and one pack would not do them justice. If the first pack was successful there would be scope to add other more 'advanced' sets, allowing more to be included and the chance to be specific to region or dates or even form. My current plan- in order to attract the widest interest- would be to offer a good scope of different ages, types and conditions of castle for the eduactational aspect and to include the most well known ones.
At the moment i'm still trying to get a feel for the popularity of such a set, especially for older children and adults, and would be extremely grateful if others could offer input- just a simple good idea or no good would be fantastic- and any input would be great too, to enable me to meet the needs of the enthusiast too.
